Negotation Skills for Librarians

My colleague Yasmin was asking if I knew of any materials on negotiation skills. Here are a few things I came up with:

We covered it at NE2007 -- the audio is on this page-- http://www.law-lib.utoronto.ca/NE2007/Proceedings.html it is program F1 "Negotiating Contracts: Tips, Tricks and Tools". I haven't listened to it (yet!), but I heard it was good.

AALL had a program in 2008 "Practical Negotiation for Law Librarians"

Stem Legal Update

My friend and colleague Steve Matthews of Stem Legal is a busy guy! Here are some of his recent announcements:

He is helping law firm client Hissey Kientz LLP get the word out about their new website, Mesothelioma Lawyers Help. The site focuses on causes, symptoms, and types of mesothelioma, and provides information on the disease and its connection to asbestos exposure. It also monitors and cites current litigation in the news, and explains the mesothelioma lawsuit process. Questions about mesothelioma and the site should be directed to HK's mesothelioma law practice group.
Stem Legal has added New York injury lawyer John Hochfelder to its roster of clients.
To help keep up with all the client work, back in January Stem Legal added a third employee, Laurel Fulford to the mix as Client Project Manager. Congratulations.
Finally, Steve Matthews is also presenting two papers at the upcoming ABA Techshow which runs April 2 - 4, 2009 in Chicago. The papers are: Web JD: If You're Not Serving Your Clients Online Someone Else Will Be with David Bilinsky, and Supercharge Your Referrals with Technology with Reid Trautz.

I like to keep a close eye on what Steve is doing because he is in many ways a role model to my own little enterprise, and when he can he pulls me in to help with the odd project. It is challenging to keep up with him!

Law Librarian Podcast - Margie Maes is Next Week's Guest

Law library podcast The Law Librarian is set to continue recording next Friday, August 8th at 3 pm CST. The show is hosted by Richard Leiter and Brian Striman.

Today's guest is Margie Maes (some readers may know her as Margie Axtmann), Executive Director of the Legal Information Preservation Alliance, a committee of AALL. Margie is also an active CALL member; I first met her on a CALL Vendor Liaison Committee panel a number of years ago when she was serving on AALL's equivalent committee, CRIV.

Somehow I missed the recording of Episode 2 - Jim Milles was the guest. It looks like The Law Librarian is gearing up for regular broadcast, with shows scheduled the next few Fridays in August.

If you miss the live broadcast, it will be available for listening from the website afterward. I don't see it in iTunes--if someone finds it there, please let us know.

Full Text: Keen vs. Weinberger - debate between authors Andrew Keen and David Weinberger on Web 2.0 in the Wall Street Journal.

Introduction by Keen:

So what, exactly, is Web 2.0? It is the radical democratization of media which is enabling anyone to publish anything on the Internet. Mainstream media's traditional audience has become Web 2.0's empowered author. Web 2.0 transforms all of us -- from 90-year-old grandmothers to eight-year-old third graders -- into digital writers, music artists, movie makers and journalists. Web 2.0 is YouTube, the blogosphere, Wikipedia, MySpace or Facebook. Web 2.0 is YOU! (Time Magazine's Person of the Year for 2006).

Is Web 2.0 a dream or a nightmare? Is it a remix of Disney's "Cinderella" or of Kafka's "Metamorphosis"? Have we -- as empowered conversationalists in the global citizen media community -- woken up with the golden slipper of our ugly sister (aka: mainstream media) on our dainty little foot? Or have we -- as authors-formerly-know-as-the-audience -- woken up as giant cockroaches doomed to eternally stare at our hideous selves in the mirror of Web 2.0?
